local bicycle network
We were asked to design a bicycle bridge across the Haarlemmertrekvaart to connect the urban areas of Voorhout and Noordwijk. The new bridge creates a much needed connection in the regional bicycle network. Sometime in the near future, a second, identical bridge will be constructed further along the same waterway.
appealing design
As always, it was our aim to design an appealing bridge that offers cyclists a comfortable crossing. Given the desired 2,5 m heigh underneath clearance, a bridge without ramps was out of the question. To minimise the height difference for cyclists, we came up with the idea of an asymmetrical construction with a load-bearing box girder that can withstand torsion. By allowing this structure to rise above the bridge deck mid-span, it not only minimises the height difference but also provides the bridge with a unique character of its own.
ramps
On the north side, the bridge connects to the Leidsevaart. Space in between this road and the Haarlemmertrekvaart is very limited. The required ramp therefore had to be placed above the water. Luckily, the 20 m width of the waterway allowed enough room for this.
Befitting the powerful bridge design, we designed asymmetrical supports located eccentrically underneath the bridge deck, leading to a cantilevered bridge deck. This adds to the slender and attractive appearance of this custom designed bicycle bridge.
stand out structural design
We wanted the bridge structure itself to be the main character of the show. That is why we chose to paint it a vibrant and bright colour. The supports however are a sober dark grey in order for them to disappear against the background. All other elements such as the railings are light grey and sober in design.
