design study for replacement of 40+ Belgian bridges
Many road bridges in Flanders need to be replaced within the next decade or so. The Flemish government selected around 40 bridges that they want to have replaced by 2030. A consortium of Arcadis, SBE and Tractebel was recently commissioned to prepare this large-scale replacement operation. The consortium has asked ipv Delft to help them create a manual outlining the desired design quality for the new bridges. The set of selected government owned bridges is very diverse.
The manual will offer insight in the different categories of bridges and provide guidelines for the design of the new bridges. The goal is to create and prescribe a standard design language, which can be applied to all bridges, while at the same time offering enough room for exceptions for bridges that require a higher level of design ambition.
